I "literally" have a question...

Check out this awesome article on the word "literally". http://www.slate.com/id/2129105

The Oresteia is full of amazingly gory details. The situations are both believable and unbelievable. Realism, not as we understand it but as we see it presented, is turned inside out and supplanted with what I will call "Hyper-Realism". How is this change neccesary or unneccesary to the telling of the Oresteia? Is it intended as a stage device for the play? Are we only now seeing it as a delivery system through writing for its audience? Literally, why is it there?
